Free software could infect your computer with programs that show a lot of ads, or with programs that consume your computer’s resources. Not all the free software out there is safe. Is all the free music production software free? No. But for now, you can start spending no money. At some point, when you have more experience, you will feel the need to try a new application. But if you are starting or have few experience, a free software would work just as great. Getting the best of the best is super cool. Ask me! I have the same Cubase version I got 5 years ago! In fact, you would install more versions with the free software than with the paid software. So you end up keeping the version you buy for a long time. If you buy version 9, it doesn’t mean that they will give you version 10 for free. But commercial software releases are not free. Ok, the free software is not released as frequently as commercial versions. Being able to really appreciate sounds, frequencies, richness, compression, reverb, etc., just takes some time! Anyway, probably your ears won’t even notice much difference between a sound generated by the free software and a sound generated by the professional software. If you have few experience, a professional software won’t help you that much.
